What Is Total Crypto Market Cap?
Total crypto market cap is the combined value of every cryptocurrency in existence, expressed in US dollars. It's the single most widely cited headline metric for the size and state of the crypto market — the same way total stock market capitalization is used to describe the size of equity markets. On TradingView, this metric is tracked under the ticker TOTAL.
When you see a headline saying "the crypto market is worth $2 trillion," that figure comes from the total market cap. It includes Bitcoin, Ethereum, every altcoin with any meaningful trading volume, and all stablecoins. It's a snapshot of where capital is allocated across the entire ecosystem at any given moment — not what the market was worth historically, but what it's worth right now based on current prices and circulating supply.
Unlike a single coin's price, TOTAL doesn't tell you what happened to any specific asset. It tells you whether the market as a whole is growing, shrinking, or holding steady. This makes it the essential starting point for any macro-level crypto market analysis.
How Total Market Cap Is Calculated
The formula is straightforward: for each cryptocurrency, multiply its current price by its circulating supply (the number of coins or tokens currently in existence and tradeable). Then sum all of those individual market caps together. The result is the total crypto market cap.
For example: Bitcoin at $90,000 with 19.8 million coins in circulation has a market cap of approximately $1.78 trillion. Ethereum at $3,000 with 120 million ETH in circulation has a market cap of approximately $360 billion. Add these to the hundreds of billions spread across all other coins and stablecoins, and you arrive at the TOTAL figure that appears on CoinMarketCap, CoinGecko, and TradingView.
One important nuance: market cap reflects circulating supply, not total supply or maximum supply. Coins that are locked, vested, or not yet issued do not count toward the circulating supply figure. This can create significant differences between a project's "fully diluted valuation" (based on max supply) and its actual market cap — a distinction that matters when evaluating altcoin projects.
Why Total Market Cap Matters as a Market Health Indicator
TOTAL functions as the crypto market's "health gauge." When TOTAL is in an uptrend on the weekly chart — making higher highs and higher lows — it signals that capital is broadly flowing into crypto and that market conditions are expanding. When TOTAL is in a downtrend — making lower highs and lower lows — it signals broad market contraction, regardless of what any individual coin is doing.
One of the most useful properties of TOTAL is that it reveals the underlying health of a rally or sell-off. A Bitcoin price rise that doesn't move TOTAL meaningfully suggests most of the gains are Bitcoin-specific, with limited broader participation. A TOTAL breakout to new highs alongside Bitcoin usually signals a healthier, more broadly supported bull market condition.
Institutional analysts, on-chain researchers, and macro traders all monitor TOTAL to confirm whether market-level signals (Bitcoin dominance trends, altcoin season indicators) are occurring in an environment of overall market expansion or contraction. Context from TOTAL makes all other indicators more meaningful.
Total Market Cap vs Bitcoin Price — What's Different
Bitcoin's price and TOTAL often move in the same direction, but they tell very different stories. Bitcoin's price tells you only about Bitcoin. TOTAL tells you about the entire ecosystem. The divergences between the two are where the most useful information lives.
The most common divergence: Bitcoin rises while TOTAL is flat or rising more slowly. This means BTC.D (Bitcoin dominance) is rising — Bitcoin is capturing a larger share of the market, often at the expense of altcoins. This is typical in the early phase of a bull market and during risk-off periods when investors prefer the relative safety of Bitcoin over speculative altcoins.
The opposite divergence — TOTAL rising faster than Bitcoin — means altcoins as a group are growing faster than Bitcoin. This is the hallmark of altcoin season and can persist for weeks or months before reversing. Understanding which divergence is occurring at any given time is the core of crypto market rotation analysis.
Historical Total Market Cap Milestones
$1 trillion: First crossed in January 2021, marking the beginning of mainstream acknowledgment of crypto as an asset class. The $1T level later became significant support during the 2022–2023 recovery phase, with traders watching closely whether the market could hold above this psychological level.
$2 trillion: Crossed briefly in April 2021 during the first leg of the bull market, then again in late 2021. The $2T level represented the zone where the mid-2021 correction began, making it important resistance on the way back up in 2023.
$3 trillion: The approximate all-time high for TOTAL, reached in November 2021. This level marked peak euphoria in that bull cycle and became the benchmark against which subsequent market expansion is measured. Breaking above $3T in a subsequent cycle would represent genuine price discovery at new all-time highs for the total market.
How to Use Total Market Cap in Your Analysis
The most actionable use of TOTAL is as a trend and context filter. Before analyzing any individual coin or altcoin sector, ask: "What is TOTAL doing on the weekly chart?" If TOTAL is below its 20-week moving average and in a downtrend, you're in a risk-off environment — most altcoins will struggle regardless of their individual chart setups. If TOTAL is above its 20-week MA and in an uptrend, you're in a risk-on environment where altcoins have tailwind.
Use TOTAL alongside TOTAL2 and TOTAL3 to read capital flows. The relationship between these three charts is more informative than any single one in isolation. See our detailed TOTAL2 and TOTAL3 guide for a full walkthrough of how to read these three metrics together as a system for identifying market rotation phases.
Check TOTAL (overall trend), TOTAL2 (altcoin participation), TOTAL3 (small-cap rotation), BTC.D (dominance direction), and ETH/BTC (rotation signal) once per week. Write one sentence summarizing the market state. This 10-minute routine gives you the context to make cleaner decisions all week.
