Top 4 DeFi Exchange Tokens to Buy? HYPE vs UNI vs ASTER vs CAKE Explained
Crypto investing has changed. The memecoin casino era rewarded hype with no substance. Today, with more institutional and educated money entering the market, investors are looking under the hood — at revenue, business models, and whether a project is actually hitting its milestones. This video applies that lens to one specific category: decentralized exchanges.
Why Diversify Within Crypto, Not Just Across Asset Classes
Most people think of diversification as spreading money across real estate, equities, commodities, and crypto. That's one layer. But diversification inside crypto matters too.
The 2021 market lifted almost everything. There's no guarantee that repeats. Since then, new projects have launched, some have delivered on their roadmaps, and many have disappeared entirely. It's the dot-com boom pattern: plenty of companies left the starting line, and most never finished the race.
A more practical approach is to pick categories you believe in, then choose the strongest names within each. That's exactly what this breakdown does with exchange tokens — and it's the same logic behind building a diversified crypto portfolio across categories rather than betting on one coin.
Why Fully Diluted Value Beats Market Cap for Comparison
Market cap is the current price times circulating supply. Fully diluted value is the current price times all tokens that will ever exist.
That difference matters. One project might have 100% of tokens in circulation, another only 20%. Their market caps look wildly different while the market is actually valuing them similarly. For an apples-to-apples comparison, FDV is the number to use — a distinction worth understanding when you compare market cap and fully diluted valuation in crypto.
Here's how the four stack up on FDV and estimated annualized revenue (DeFi Llama fee estimates):
- Hyperliquid (HYPE): ~$67B FDV, ~$780M annualized revenue
- Uniswap (UNI): ~$2.7B FDV, $500M+ in fees
- Aster (ASTER): ~$5B FDV, ~$140M run rate
- PancakeSwap (CAKE): ~$1.5B FDV, ~$200M
Most crypto has no revenue at all. These four do, which is the starting point for any real analysis.
Token Value Capture: Does Revenue Reach the Token?
Revenue only matters to you if it reaches the token you hold. Simplified, there are two models: governance-only (you vote, nothing else) and direct value capture (fees flow back through buybacks, burns, or staker rewards).
- HYPE: exchange fees fund buybacks, with tokens burned or moved to a treasury — the strongest direct capture of the four
- ASTER: most protocol revenue committed to token value accrual and ecosystem incentives
- CAKE: revenue sharing plus treasury-funded buybacks and staker rewards
- UNI: historically governance-only, with fees going to liquidity pool depositors, though a recent fee-switch vote introduced indirect value via burns
If you've never earned fees from a decentralized exchange, it helps to understand how liquidity pools pay out swap fees before judging which model suits you. Saucer Swap on Hedera runs a similarly strong value-push program — a topic for another video.
Where the Valuation Gap Sits
HYPE has the strongest economics and revenue growth, but also by far the widest gap between revenue and FDV — which is why a pullback before buying is worth waiting for. CAKE is the long-standing operator. ASTER has strong revenue but meaningful dilution risk, since most tokens aren't circulating yet. UNI has massive fees but the weakest direct holder economics — though that could change through governance.
Rather than picking one, holding two or more across the category spreads that uncertainty. Once you've narrowed a shortlist, you still need somewhere to buy. If you're looking to buy smaller-cap altcoins with low spot trading fees on MEXC, check listing availability and fee tiers before funding an account.
